
These flags indicate that someone has requested a locate and may be planning to dig. After the locate is requested, Iowa One Call notifies all utilities that may have buried lines in the area to mark their location with colored flags that correspond to specific utility types. Work being performed by these contractors is almost always in the right-of-way, or within an existing utility easement.
It's crucial to preserve and maintain the location of flags. Obscured or displaced markings may lead to accidental damage. Residents shouldn't mow over, or remove the flags, especially if they value their water, sewer, gas, internet, phone, or other services. If you need or want to remove the flags, please call 811 and speak with an operator or call your local utility company. The phone number on the flags will indicate which utility company you should reach out to.
Flags in your lawn doesn't necessarily mean there will be digging in your lawn. Many times, individuals or companies don't have the information needed to pin-point the locate request so they will call in several properties to make sure that the locators have marked the proposed area entirely.
Private utility lines and private distribution networks do not get marked by utility companies. When a property owner or tenant has any type of private lines, they are responsible for locating those facilities or hiring someone to locate them on their behalf. Private lines include any lines that serve outbuildings, irrigation or sprinkler systems, hot tubs, security lighting, pet fences, pools, and natural gas grills, etc.
If you plan to dig, contact Iowa One Call at least 48 hours before you plan to begin, excluding weekends and holidays. Contacting Iowa One Call helps to prevent damage to underground utilities, injuries, and the disruption of essential services.
